Ep.24: Memory
Deepak's newsletter episode 24
Happy Friday!
I hope you’ve had a wonderfully productive week 🌻
This week, I wanted to share a concept I came across in Daniel Kahneman’s book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, that has repercussions in every human interaction we have. Especially in medicine, education, and even parenting.
It’s called the Peak End Rule, and essentially, it forms the basis for how memories are formed. To think…in the end, what is life but a collection of memories?
The rule is this: our memories around built around the most intense point of any experience, and the end. That’s it.
Notably, NOT the duration of the experience. Just the most intense point and the conclusion! This means we are predictable in how we build our memories, which means we can hack ourselves, for better or worse, based on what we choose to focus on.
Kanehan presents loads of evidence and even his research, which he won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002 for.
Without getting too excited and lengthy about it all, I will leave you with his summary:
3 Ideas of the week 💡
The Pessimist criticizes, the optimist creates -Tim Ferris
Do one thing every day that scares you. -Eleanor Roosevelt
Perception. Action. Acceptance. -The Daily Stoic
That’s all this week! I hope everyone makes some great memories this weekend 😄
See you next week!
