Ep. 3: Mission Statement

Deepak's newsletter episode 3

Dear friends & family,

Happy Friday! I hope you’ve all had a productive and enriching week ☀️

🚀 You’ll learn how to approach self-improvement! 🚀

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working on my personal statements for my residency applications, and with the regular school year about to start, I felt this was the perfect time to share how I approach self-improvement for myself and our students.

Speaking of students, If you have a high performer, skip all the way down for a link to Nasa’s Tech Rise Student Challenge! Also, you’ll find that our lead math and science Ninja, Gian, has uploaded our first YouTube video on how gravity can affect a center of mass as part of our growing series on breaking down complicated topics in the sciences.

Let’s get into writing your OWN mission statement.

“There is no failure, only feedback.” - Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsley

So, this week, I want to share a thoroughly studied learning assessment tool, used in the medical field to manage feedback, theoretically to 1) help us understand how we learn and 2) how we can identify how our patients learn to make the greatest impact in their healthcare management.

Of course, a lightbulb went off in my head a few years ago when I first took this test for myself 💡

You can use this assessment tool to better understand how your students learn! 📚️

So many students (me included) find great conflict either at home with mom or dad or at school with teachers (or at work with bosses) because:

1) Learning styles are not understood and possibly incorrectly labeled.

2) Different learning styles, when misunderstood, create micro and macro clashes.

3) The sum of those misunderstood clashes fosters animosity and reinforces resistance instead of resolve and frustration instead of solutions.

Usually, that’s when a doctor or tutor enters the picture so here’s how you can probably avoid me altogether! 🥼👨‍🏫

I found a free version of the software that utilizes the Myers-Briggs philosophy.

Once you get your report, you will be on track toward having a better understanding of how you and your student learns.

Then, you’ll be better equipped to get the right tools and systems in place for a more productive life of learning, I promise!

I want to take it one step further because I’ve noticed an undercurrent that I mentioned in Episode 1: Identity.

The only limit is YOU.

I challenge you to read and write down YOUR OWN personal mission statement in life (essentially what a personal statement is). This can be a great exercise for students and parents to do together!

How can you pick a road if you don’t know where you’re going?

Be honest with yourself. The more honest, the better (for YOU)! 🫵

Then, go to your calendar and place an event 6 months from now to revisit both your personality test results AND your mission statement. 🧠

#I take myself seriously

If you need a little guidance on writing your own mission statement, I found this great article:

If a video on how to get started is your vibe, here you are :)

Are your thoughts, words, and actions in line with who you have decided to be?

Have a great start to the weekend and I’ll see you all next week! 🌻
