Ep. 26: Namaste

Deepak's newsletter episode 26

Happy Friday, everyone! 🌻

I hope you’ve had a great week 😄

This week, I wanted to share a mini reflection about the Hindi word, Namaste.

It gets thrown around a lot in the West, even jokingly, so I wanted to learn about the exact meaning, and this is what I found.

“Guest is God” as written in the ancient Vedas. Namaste is a greeting that symbolizes saluting the divine within you. The gesture is indicated by folded palms placed before the chest, extending friendship with love and humility.

A better understanding of this word couldn’t have come at a better time as I wrapped up a month working in the Emergency Department, seeing dozens of patients for their ailments, guiltily feeling overworked and even burdened at times.

Reminding myself to find the health in patients (vs just disease) is a bedrock in my training and certainly a challenge with how healthcare operates in the real world. But greeting every patient, in my mind or heart at least, with a Namaste, might help me on my path.

That’s all this week, and Namaste to you 🙏

See you next week! 🌻
