Ep. 18: Brevity
Deepak's newsletter episode 18
Happy Friday, everyone! 🌻
Moving forward, I want to try something new.
As you all know, I’m a huge fan of James Clear (author of Atomic Habits), and his 3,2,1 framework (3 ideas, 2 quotes, 1 question) but I want to push it even further per my takeaways from the book, Smart Brevity.
I’ll be sharing brief inspiration that I come across in my weekly readings, teaching lessons, and experiences working in the hospital.
This week, my mind and body inspiration came from the book, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. I also found a bit of spiritual motivation while watching a mixed martial arts documentary (I’m picking up Muy Thai training, so needed some motivation to justify my bruised shins :)).
Mind:
The great philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Every man I meet is my superior in some way. In that, I learn of him.” —This resonated with another quote I read somewhere, along the lines of everyone you meet knows something that you don’t. I love this because it reminds me to being in a learning mindset with (not necessarily at teaching one, initially) the student or patient in front of me.
Body:
Professor William James, “We are only half awake. We are making use of only a small part of our physical and mental resources. Stating the thing broadly, the human individual thus lives far within his limits. He possesses powers of various sorts which he habitually fails to use.” —This struck chords from pages in Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker and Outlive by Peter Attia. There is SO much science still does not know about our minds and biology.
Spirit:
Summary of a comment Conor McGregor made in his documentary, McGregor Forever, on Netflix, when asked about what he wants from fighting: I don’t want anything. I move through life with a have mindset. When you are grateful, I mean truly grateful for what you have, there is no time or energy for wanting. I live a life of having, not wanting. —Gratitude is an immense force, that can be tapped into with intention. Definitely on brand with the ideas I came across in The Creative Act by Rick Rubin
That’s all this week! I hope you find value in these weekly messages. And if you do, please share this with your friends!
Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you all next Friday 🙂
